ENGAGE is a detached youthwork project based in two areas of the town. One night a week the team go out in pairs onto the local estate to meet and get to know the young people there, and another night go into the town centre.
Detached youthwork:
… allows a young person to set the agenda
… allows the formation of a non-judgemental relationship
… allows a worker to offer support and address issues
During the summer months we have been playing football (badly), basketball, cricket and lots more; as well of course as simply talking to the young people we meet week by week.
We have been very encouraged by the response of the young people we have met, and their willingness to talk to us!
At the end of the summer we also held a fun day on the estate which was enjoyed by all who came, even though it was pouring down with rain! We have lots of plans for the future including more fun days and other events.
Please look out for more information!
As of 19th November 2006 we will be using the Sunnycrest Centre as a drop in for young people. This will take place every Sunday between 4.00pm and 5.45pm. If you’re at secondary school, you’re more than welcome to come along!
